Jeremy and Anna carried the man into the guest bedroom. He was so weak he couldn’t speak, and thus couldn’t argue. In fact, the man couldn’t do much more than look around. He was beat up, but it looked like he still had all his faculties. After all, he was breathing and he had a pulse. Anna got the man a bottle of water, but he fell asleep before she could give it to him. Together, Jeremy and Anna stood at the foot of the bed, looking down at their prisoner.

“Who do you think he is?” Anna asked.

“I think he’s being held and tortured by Mr. Wilkinson, the guy who Dr. Miller said was affiliated with the S.O.G. Maybe this guy worked for the government.”

“It’s possible,” Anna mused.

Through the prisoner’s tattered clothes, Jeremy could see he had a cross branded on his chest.

“We should wash him,” Anna said.

But Jeremy looked repulsed.

“Do we have to? I mean we did just save him.”

“Jeremy, he can’t stay like this.”

Jeremy knew Anna was right. So together they brought him to the master bathroom. They found some antibacterial soap, and took off the prisoner’s clothes. The soap smelled like lavender—the kind Anna’s dad used to use. They turned on the water and set the prisoner in the bath, but he did not regain consciousness. Slowly they washed the dried blood off of him. He had many bruises, two of which shut his eyes almost completely. Anna then grabbed some Neosporin and they ended up using most of the tube on him. The man began to weakly hold onto them as they put him in some of Anna’s father’s old clothes. They changed the comforter to the bed before putting him back on it.

“He looks pretty weird in your dad’s clothes,” Jeremy acknowledged.

Anna agreed. He was wearing a light green polo shirt and some corduroy pants. He looked like he was in the movie Fight Club because he was wearing semi-professional clothing but had bruises along his arms and face.

“I think we have to tie him down,” Jeremy said.

“Are you crazy? He can barely move!” Anna replied, aghast.

“I don’t like the idea of it either, but we don’t know who this guy is. He could be a murderer or something. We need to make sure that—in the event that he’s dangerous—he doesn’t kill you in the middle of the night. I mean, living here with him wouldn’t be safe unless we did that.”

Despite initially hating the idea, Anna found the logic in it. They found some zip ties in her father’s office, and a desk chair. Having seen movies where people escape while sitting on rolling desk chairs, Jeremy took off its wheels. They reclined the chair as much as possible, and sat the prisoner on it. They put gauze around his ankles, which were raw from the rope at the Johnson Space Center, and went over that with duct tape. Then they taped his ankles to the legs of the chair, and put zip ties over that.
